Just a few months after our Philippine Consulate General Hong Kong exhibit, I was approached by the then Director of Enrich HK, Lenlen Mesina if any of my friends in arts are interested to come together for a project. At that time, my friends in arts were all just getting to know each other. But I did tell them about the project.
We were just bunch of art lovers but not really deep in arts. We did meet few times to do painting in parks but not really serious. We do not have logo, or any aim/mission, we were just plainly having fun.
When I told my friends about the project, they were really excited. And that's the start we needed to take arts seriously. So, in May 1, 2017 we named our group Guhit Kulay. We found the inspiration when we were walking and exploring Hollywood Road. With all the colours, graffiti and wall murals in the narrow street, and corners, the phrase Guhit Kulay just popped and from then on, we named our group Guhit Kulay.
Fast forward to April the next year, our first international exhibit was held at the Hive Spring in Aberdeen Hong Kong with my co-founders Noemi Manguerra, Ruby Timtim and Cecil Eduarte.
The exhibit was organised by Enrich HK, HKU and Goldsmith University of London. The first leg of exhibit was in London, 2nd in Manila at the Vargas Museum and in Hong Kong for the final destination in April 26 to May 14, 2018.
The initiative gained a lot of exposure, many arts enthusiast in the Filipino community contacted us and joined our group. We were also invited to participate in different panels and media interviews concerning migrant worker issues. We were also invited to collaborate with other artists and exhibit our works with them. It was a huge learning curve given the years of experience as domestic worker in HK with very limited time to focus on our talent. We owe it from our supporters, and
friends for believing in us and continue to support us.
